Celebrating Mentorship and Community Impact at the RIF Mentor Appreciation Event
Written by Alison Yee
On a beautiful morning at the Alloy 26 Lounge & Auditorium, Faros Properties had the honor of hosting an event dedicated to the amazing mentors who contribute to the success of Reading is Fundamental (RIF). As the Business & Development Manager, I was honored to speak about our partnership with RIF, as well as the incredible impact we’ve seen firsthand from our involvement in this important initiative.
At Faros, we believe in investing in the future. And what better way to invest than by supporting the next generation? That’s why we’re so passionate about our work with RIF, an organization that is helping to shape the lives of children, one story at a time.
I’ve had the privilege of mentoring a first grader through RIF, and it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Each week, I visit a nearby elementary school, where I read with my mentee, Lashell. Our first reading session was memorable for reasons I never expected: instead of diving right into the books, Lashell spent most of the time braiding my hair. In the middle of this impromptu hair styling session, she paused, looked up at me, and said, “Wow, your hair is so gray! Don’t worry, you’re still cute though!”
Her candid remark caught me of guard, but it was a moment that perfectly encapsulates the joy and lightheartedness these connections can bring. Later that evening, I shared the story with my own children—one of whom is also a first grader—and they couldn’t stop laughing. My teenagers even chimed in, agreeing that Lashell had a pretty spot-on perspective. From that moment on, whenever someone in my family is having a tough day, we remind each other, “Don’t worry, you’re still cute though!” It's become a family mantra, and it’s all thanks to Lashell’s wisdom!
But beyond the laughs and lighthearted moments, the work we’re doing with RIF is deeply meaningful. It’s about more than just reading a book—it’s about building connections, supporting one another, and helping create opportunities for young children that will last a lifetime. At Faros, we understand the importance of community, and we’re honored to be able to contribute in this way.
This event was a special celebration of the mentors who show up week after week to support these kids. Their dedication is inspiring, and it’s clear that their efforts are making a lasting impact. A heartfelt thank you goes to RIF for providing such a powerful platform for mentorship and for bringing us all together to celebrate these incredible individuals.
As we reflect on the significance of mentorship, I encourage anyone who hasn’t yet joined the RIF family to consider becoming a mentor. The joy of making a difference is immeasurable, and the connections we build with these children will shape their futures— and ours—forever.
Thank you, again, to the mentors, to Reading is Fundamental, and to everyone who’s a part of this incredible journey. And just remember—whenever you’re feeling down or uncertain, take a page out of Lashell’s book: “You’re still cute though!”
