Pittsburgh is a city that appreciates art, music, and community, all of which is celebrated through numerous events like the Three Rivers Arts Festival, Greek and Italian food festivals, and more recently, OpenStreetsPGH, which debuted three years ago. This event invites people from all over the city to dance, run, walk, and bike through city streets by temporarily closing them to traffic.
Pittsburgh is one of more than 100 cities in North America to participate in this event; originally inspired by “Ciclovia” in Bogota, Colombia, many locations have adopted this practice to achieve environmental, social, and economic goals. OpenStreetsPGH is on its way to reaching these milestones, as about 55,000 people attended the three events in 2016, representing 120 zip codes, which illustrates just how much diversity the event attracts. The upcoming 2017 dates are Sunday, June 25th, and Sunday, July 30th, from 9am-1pm. Each date has different routes, which helps you take full advantage of the different Pittsburgh neighborhoods.
The upcoming OpenStreetsPGH on June 25th features the “City of Bridges” route from the West End to the North Side and Downtown. There will be various vendors along the streets for the active runners, walkers, and bikers to check out, including our tenant Union Fitness! If you’re a member, or would like to see what Union Fitness is all about, make sure you check out one of their free classes during OpenStreetsPGH on the North Side. They’ll be teaching Bootcamp on the Street at 9am, 10am and 11am, Bootcamp on the Plaza at 9:30am, and Yoga on the Lawn at 10:30am.
Open Streets After Party
Because the streets will be closed off in the North Side, those of us at Nova Place decided to celebrate on June 25th from noon-4pm by hosting an OpenStreetsPGH After Party! Come join us for music, games, food, and fun, and experience the Pittsburgh community at its finest. We’ll have a selection of food trucks, beer for purchase from Penn Brewery, cornhole and music!
Keeping in mind the wellness theme of the event, Union Fitness will also host a Deadlift Competition at the After Party from noon-3pm. The $25 entry fee benefits Urban Impact, a local charity that benefits at-risk youth of the North Side. If you’re interested in the competition, click here to sign up! Here are some helpful reminders from Union Fitness for the Deadlift Competition:
-Plan on arriving no later than 10:30 a.m. for warm-ups (or earlier to find parking).
-Parking will be available in the Nova Place Garage at the posted rates and street parking is also available along North commons and Allegheny Square (off East Commons).
-For those of you that have done meets before – this will be an extremely casual competition.
-For those of you who have not competed before – we will walk you through all of the “rules” and help you along the way!
You won’t want to miss the OpenStreetsPGH After Party on July 25th from 12-4pm. So, after taking advantage of the open-street freedom, courtesy of OpenStreetsPGH, bring your friends and family to the Nova Place Plaza for our After Party that celebrates health, wellness, Pittsburgh, and the start of Summer 2017.
